Esbjerg Art Museum
Esbjerg Art Museum explores many aspects of modern art. The art museum presents the latest trends in contemporary art and puts aesthetic experiences on the agenda.
The museum’s collection of around 800 works of art includes Danish visual arts from c. 1920 to the present and the works of artists like the avant-garde COBRA painters, Richard Mortensen, Robert Jacobsen, Svend Wiig Hansen and Per Kirkeby, as well as representatives of more recent art, including Christian Lemmerz, Michael Kvium and Peter Bonde.
The museum reopened in 1997 after an extensive refurbishment project and now offers two features that are innovative in the museum world: open archives and an aesthetic laboratory.
The open archives initiative brings the art collection out to the public. Paintings not exhibited in the permanent collection are hung on forty extendable walls. This enables visitors to put together their own experience of Esbjerg Art Museum. The open archives also include the sensory (smell) installation “Wittgenstein's Garden” by Skeel and Skriver – and inspiration for new art experiences.
Groups (by arrangement only) can acquire ideas for inspiring aesthetic experiences by conducting experiments in the aesthetic laboratory.

Ribe Art Museum
Ribe Art Museum opened in 1891. The collection presents Danish art from 1750 to 1940, with primary emphasis on Denmark’s Golden Age, realism, the Skaw Painters, Funen artists, modernism and the interwar years.
Children are one of the museum’s target groups. A children’s club has been set up, the museum houses exhibitions of children’s pictures, and the museum is continuously seeking new types of conducted tours of the museum, specially aimed at the museum’s younger visitors.
Art at the conservatory
The lovely, elegant concert hall at the VMK – Academy of Music and Music Communication in Esbjerg offers a unique art experience. The old turbine hall has been beautifully restored and Hans Tyrrestrup’s attractive friezes are an inspiring visual experience as you listen to music performed by conservatory students.
Mennesket ved Havet (Man Meets the Sea)
Sculptor Svend Wiig’s impressive Mennesket ved Havet (Man Meets the Sea) towers over the beach north of Esbjerg. The sculpture depicts the pure unadulterated encounter of the human race with the forces of nature – before the sea rises up and starts to “take action”. The identical faces stare across the sea, creating an almost divine impression. On a clear day, the nine-metre-high sculpture can be seen at a distance of ten kilometres.
Art and craft art in Ribe
Over the years, the Wadden Sea and the marshland have exerted a unique power of attraction on artists and craft artists. Ribe is no exception by virtue of its beautiful setting and having the oldest cultural history in Denmark. Many artists are inspired by this area to capture their artistic fantasies and dreams in works of art.
Visit the many demonstration workshops in and around Ribe and experience large and small works of art being created.
Galleries
Career Country also has a wide diversity of galleries. This includes the large, grand galleries offering canapés and champagne to humble demonstration workshops where you risk getting wet paint on your clothes or where you might be offered a bottle of beer to quench your thirst.
Every year, the Blå Døre (Blue Doors) artists’ association invites the public into artists’ homes, ateliers, workshops and galleries.
If you’re an artist yourself or if you would like to develop your talent, then pay a visit to Tobakken where Esbjerg Kunstvirke (Esbjerg Art Service) is located on the top floor, or go down to the basement and take part in “Det Kreative Værksted” (The Creative Workshop).
