Unique outdoor experiences

The Career Country countryside is unique and affords countless opportunities for experiencing the forces of Mother Nature and her whims, spectacular performances and fantastic wonders. You have a wide variety of possibilities when planning a weekend outing in the countryside. Visit forests, streams or lakes, go on a seal safari, feed a red deer or watch the stunning flocks of starlings gather over the landscape before they migrate.

Marbæk District

The Marbæk District covers 1,300 hectares 12 kilometres north-west of Esbjerg bordering on Ho Bay and Varde Stream. Today the area serves as a nature park for the communities of Esbjerg and Varde and is scenically valuable and unusual. The varied countryside affords fine opportunities for various outdoor activities. The lakes offer a profusion of birdlife, there is an extensive network of paths for hikers, cyclists and horseback riders, and the beaches and dunes call out for you to explore them.

If you drive past Marbækgård Farm – also the location of the district’s information centre, a restaurant and minigolf course – you come to a beach area offering barbecuing facilities, long picnic tables and toilets.

Vognsbølparken and Dyrehaven

At the heart of Esbjerg is Vognsbølparken, a green oasis. On a stroll through the wood and around the lakes, you get the opportunity to feed ducks, goats and several different species of deer in Dyrehaven. The green areas are also ideal for ball games and other playful activities, and each year they are the setting of various runs and musical events.

Birdlife around Ribe

The birdlife in the Wadden Sea around Ribe is overwhelming. Besides serving as a “breadbasket” for migrating birds, it is also breeding grounds for a wide variety of birds, including rare and endangered species.

The Wadden Sea island of Mandø in particular is a veritable eldorado for birdwatchers. Keep your eyes peeled already on the way to Mandø on the Mandø Bus. If you hike or cycle around the island during the migrating and breeding season, you will experience a profusion of birdlife, both within the dykes and on the foreland.

Abundant birdlife can be experienced along Ribe Østerå stream all year round. A birdwatching tower, also designed to accommodate the disabled and with superb views across the Wadden Sea, is only a ten-minute walk from the train station.

“Darkening of the Sun”

You can experience the “darkening of the sun” around Ribe, which occurs when thousands of starlings flock in fantastic formations as a prelude to their annual migration to warmer climes or when they return in spring.

The magnificent Wadden Sea

The Wadden Sea to become a National Park
The Danish parliament has designated the Wadden Sea as one of four forthcoming national parks in Denmark. The Wadden Sea is a unique nature area with an unrivalled cultural heritage, so designating the Wadden Sea as a national park ensures the protection of the area’s flora and fauna. In addition, it enables the Wadden Sea to be the object of positive marketing initiatives which include, not least, foods produced in the area.

The Wadden Sea is one of the most important wetland areas in the world. This vast, unique nature area is brimming with life and experiences. The Wadden Sea is both the shimmering, still inner waters and the waves pounding the other side of the embankment.

The animal life is the Wadden Sea’s unique feature and inhabits the air, shallow water and tidal flats. Nowhere else is it possible to experience as many birds during migrating season as here. Between ten and twelve million aquatic birds travel through the Wadden Sea area every year as they migrate to or from their breeding grounds. The Wadden Sea also has Denmark’s largest population of common seals and the shallow waters are breeding grounds for many of our most important fish species.

Visit the Wadden Sea Centre and learn much more about the Wadden Sea’s flora, fauna and culture

Mandø, an island in the Wadden Sea

The trip to Mandø is totally dependent on tidal waters, as the island can only be accessed by vehicle at ebb tide. In summer, two tractor-driven buses cross the Wadden Sea every day to and from Mandø.

Mandø is a true paradise for nature lovers who want to enjoy the bird and animal life. There are fine opportunities for cycling or hiking around the island. A visit to Koresand, a large sand hill south-west of Mandø is a wonderful experience. Ride on “Sælen” out to the sand hill and experience the splendid scenery and see the seals in the seal sanctuary.

Streams and lakes

There are several major streams in the Bramming area, including Sneum, Holsted and Ilsted, which are popular angling areas. The Ribe and Esbjerg areas have a number of lakes, some of which are stocked with fish, providing plenty of angling opportunities. Contact one of the local tourist offices for further details about fishing licences and areas.
