After moving to a new area, unpacking your packing boxes and getting off to a good start at work, something might seem to be missing: friends. How it is possible to meet people you can invite over for a Friday evening barbecue, go to the cinema with on Saturday evening, or go for an outing with on Sunday afternoon if the people you usually hang out with live at the other end of the country? An excellent way to meet new people is to join a network.
The following networks are very different but all of them have one thing in common: they welcome new members; all are located in Esbjerg Municipality; and all can serve as a quick way to meeting new people.
NewPeople – Esbjerg
Private initiative in English
NewPeople - Esbjerg is an offer aimed specifically at foreigners who find their way into Esbjerg Municipality’s numerous international companies. NewPeople was started by Selma Pedersen in February 2008, and the purpose is mainly to provide newcomers of foreign origin a good opportunity to get to know the area and each other. ’Danish’ immigrants who wish to be part of an international network are very welcome, of course. NewPeople – Esbjerg meets about once a month. English is the main language. Please contact Selma Pedersen on +45 2332 6147 or sinajo@esenet.dk for further information.
Webpage is soon to come.
Open fellowship for families with young children
Church initiative
A new offer for families with young children was launched in the spring of 2008, aimed at people who wish to join a church-based fellowship of adults and children. The network – called Klyngen (Cluster) – is based in Kvaglund Church and is not only an offer for new arrivals in the community but for all families with young children. Klyngen meets regularly one Friday evening a month at the church and also organises a few family outings every year. The purpose of Klyngen is to offer Christian fellowship to children and adults alike, but also to nurture informal networks so the families feel like inviting each other over for barbecues, ball games, video evenings and much more besides.

Ten meetings of members are held each year based on different themes relating to business issues, social issues and culture. The annual theme for 2008 is “Being a Businesswoman in 2008”. Membership dues are DKK 1,000 a year and it costs DKK 175 to participate in each meeting of members, which includes dinner. Newcomers’ network for students
A new network started by StudiebyenEsbjerg.dk
It's not always easy to get your bearings in a large city when you arrive as a new student. You have many things to find out, like where your school is located, what shops are available, how do you get a flat and, most importantly, what about your social life? To deal with these issues, Studiebyen Esbjerg has launched a newcomers’ network that organises guided tours, games evenings, trips to the cinema, bowling evenings and more. The network is offered to all newcomers studying in Esbjerg. The idea of the network is to make it fun and easy to meet other students who are not from Esbjerg either, and why should getting to know other people, making friends or even entering into a relationship have to cost something?
